The other dogs screamed the name of their fallen friend. "JASON!" they screamed. The one that had just gotten his ear bit off was cowering in pain. Ire took no shame, no pity for the pup; a large paw threw itself asunder the smaller dog's skull as it cracked.
Their instincts took hold. The pack of dogs threw themselves at their adversary. Ire laughed, a slather of blood flew from his teeth into the air as his head exalted and reared in delight of battle. His booming voice rang into the still night, "Come at me you fucking maggots!" He dodged a set of jaws, letting himself lower to their level and grabbed one by the paw to throw him against his comrades like a rag doll. Ire stretched his neck up in sheer audacity. One took him by the throat, the others followed suit and each tightly attached themselves to his flesh.
One, the smallest of them all, caught sight of the old green male. He was standing tall, watching the battle. Without another thought, he threw himself at the older dog...

Allowing his fangs to clasp down upon the stray's neck, he gave the lighter dog a shake and threw him down. "Out of here, curs!" The mongrel crouched as if to attack again, but the stance of the older dog sent him running. It seemed this old man was no cripple to be pushed around. And he wasn't, Ghest had fought bears and boars, killed cougars and wolves. He wasn't the least bit a push over.
His gaze drifted pas the battle scene as a blur threw itself at him. Growling beneath his breath Barghest dug his feet into the sand, accepting the rush. The small dog tore its fangs into his shoulder but Ghest stood fast. "Annoying pups. Come back when you've fought lions!" He snarled, throwing his shoulder with the small dog clinging his shoulder, to the sands, letting his weight fall full upon it. The canine held his grip for a few moments longer before sand choked his nose and forced him to release the ridgeback just to avoid suffocating.
Barghest stepped back from the fray, his gaze shifting to the female to ensure her safety. The other dog had gone stir crazy, and Ghest knew he was no in his right mind. "Girl! Get out of here. Your friend is not himself!"

So much blood it was everywhere. In the air, on the once pristine white virgin sand, some of the warm liquid even splashed onto her coat. "No..." her voice came out as a barely audible whisper. Husky and shallow her breaths came in short bursts. Her yellow eyes became blurry with tears at the sight. It was all too similar to the day when her master had died. The lack of screams, the blood- Oh, the blood! The smell gets in your nose an never leaves. Ghest said something. Goldie did not hear it. Like a dear in headlights, she was unable to think let alone have a single thought...
Ire cackled with delight and licked his blood stained maw. He had just maimed another, tearing the soul from his body. Feeling a writhing body suddenly go limp in his jaws, the feeling as the strays life slipped away.... "Is that all, maggots?" he mocked, dropping the dead carcass. The dogs were seeing how truly fearsome these dogs were. They were no match for them, not even the older dog. Suddenly more frightened than ever, the few survivors turned their tails and tried to escape. "Where are you all going?! This isn't over yet!!" Ire threw himself forward, his large paw slipped in the loose sand and his body fell on a dog. He yelped as the larger dark brown hound had knocked the wind from his body. Ire stared into his traumatized orbs, glistening with tears of terror. "P-P-Please... ....please..." he begged, too scared to do anything else. "Alright...." he responded in a tone dripping with malice. The tan dog didn't budge. "Go on then. Run off with your little friends. Skidaddle..." a voice with obvious mock caring.
The dog struggled to rise, he turned his back on Ire and fled. He did not make it far enough, the taller dog had locked his teeth around the lower part of his spine. The tan stray squealed and howled with pain. With the dog still in his mouth, he turned. "Hm?" Ire's burning orange eye caught Goldie staring at him. "What are you looking at with such big round eyes?"

Somehow, he was reminded of one hunt gone wrong. He had saved his master and himself, but the rest of the party, dead. Dogs and men, before his master finally shot the bear through the head. It was a hellish beast too, gone mad through some reason or another. A lot like now, a crazed animal with a lust for death and blood. The calm, cool minded hunter had never felt it. Even though he took down lions and boar and many other things, it was the hunt that thrilled him. Not the death, not senseless slaughter such as this. All in all it was very ... annoying.
"I'm getting too old for this..." He muttered beneath his breath, as the girl froze. His feet kicked up sand as he leapt to appear in front of her, separating the girl from the crazed hound. "Damn it girl..." Was his muted reply as blue eyes focused on the crazed hound. Ghest had a feeling that the mongrel in his jaws was already lost, even if he let him go. The cracking sound of jaws on spine was not ... pleasant. Barghest couldn't just stand there though, so he took a step forward. "Drop 'im. That's enough killing."

"Ah, old man... you stand before me?" Ire asked sardonically. He tightened his jaw muscles and relished in the feel of the other dog's flesh turn to mush in his jaws. More blood gushed from every puncture wound of each tooth in his mouth. The tan dog screams and breaking sobs hung in the air. "I'm tired of your screams..." What Ire did next had two sick reasons behind it; first it was to put the poor mongrel out of his misery and the second was to show just how dangerous he was to deal with at Ghest.
The hound placed the dog paralyzed with pain and a mortal wound on the now red sand, with one paw he pinned his neck down and with the other foreleg, he applied pressure to the lower part of the victim's legs. Ire's ears went back, he knew this was going to be messy. Just then, Ire looked into the other dog's eyes, those green orbs of wisdom. He opened his maw as wide as he could get it, and grabbed a hold of his entire stomach area. His fangs perforating flesh like paper.
"N...no... please....." the dog began to cry. Ire growled. The dog's body began to quiver and shake with impending doom. His whimpers turned to agonizing screams of utter pain as his inners were torn from his body...
Goldie turned her head away just as the dark hound had lowered his head to him. She knew in the back of her mind that she should do something. Anything. Ghest had jumped in front of her, shielding her from Muddy. No, that's not Muddy....
"Ire.... please no more...." she whispered as the dog began to plead for mercy. His growl blocked any shred of her voice from reaching him. Goldie covered her ears with her paws as the hapless dog screamed a gut wrenching yell...

There was nothing he could do. His ears flicked back at the dog's cry of pain. But to attack the crazed hound would do nothing more than further harm him. He had half a mind to hit the bloodthirsty mutt head on. Bu with fangs already embedded into flesh, it would just cause the guts to be ripped clean out of the poor corpse to be. Ghest growled in reply to the dog's 'insult', but he still remained far more calm than most other would.
"You're a coward." It was not an attempt to insult for the sake of insulting. The hunter could care less if the crazed hound was pissed at him. If he left the dying dog alone all for he better. Either way he was prepared to fight, he never backed down from one. Not even when he had a human with a gun behind him did he run from bear or jaguar.
He exposed fangs breifly, before taking a step forward. "I'm not too old yet. I can take you. Easy." Hell yeah, he still had a bit of the old spark left in him. He'd prove it too, as in a few short moments he'd lunged forward. Not to attack the crazed Ire though.
Rather, he ducked low and grabbed the injured dog by the neck, snatching him just enough away from he larger canine to get enough room to snap its neck. The shrill cry before hand rung in his ears. A bit of mercy for the damn hing was all he could do anyways. It put him at a vulnerable position, but he figured it was worth it.
))Done!((

Goldie's eyes had glazed over. She stared blankly at her 'friend.' The macabre scene before was like that of a blossoming crimson flower... Ire watched Ghest with a steely orange eye. It burned with a twisted intensity, bent on pain and agony. [shadow=brown,left,300]"You're a coward."[/shadow] Ire flinched. It wasn't his words, it was the old dog's stance. He was fearless of him. The demented hound had acclimated himself to others cowering before him, and there he was. Standing tall and defiant before him. I'll show him to fear me... He growled a deep low noise. Hackles raised, a blood stained face stared at the other dog. [glow=brown,2,300] "I'm not too old yet. I can take you. Easy." [/glow] He charged at him. Ire released the dying dog below him and snapped at Ghest. The green hound ducked out of the way to grab the tan dog that was bleeding out in front of them all. Ire missed his intended target, his neck. "You call me a coward? That was a cheap move, Grandpa!" He licked his fangs, "Come at me like a real male... If you are a male, that is..." he snickered wickedly. The Labrador mix shook with pain. He blinked at Ghest with tear filled brown eyes. "th....th-ank... you....." he said weakly before his head fell onto the ground.

His maw stained with blood, it was not until he felt the little mix's breath cease that he released it. "That was just a warm up shot." Was all the reply Ghest had to give at Ire's attempt to insult. Once you got to be his age, such childish tricks rolled off you like water off a duck's back. All Ghest aimed to do know was give the girl a chance to escape. Hell, he'd already gone though the trouble of rescuing her from drowning. He might as well go all the way.
He stood strongly, unflinching at the crazed canine's snickers and taunts. "Well then. Are you going to try and kill me by boring me to death with talk or are you going to do something about it?" Ghest didn't move, simply waiting for the delusional hound to attack.

Ire shook with rage. "You just don't get it do you?.... You could have just rolled over and taken it.... But no... Now, your forcing me to do this!" He charged forward, his paws kicking up a wave of sand. Suddenly, Goldie turned and began sprinting toward the water. "IRE!! Come on, wimp! Over here!"
An orange eye found her and caused him to switch targets. He began running toward her. This is bad... I really hope this works..... Sorry Ghest, I don't mean to steal your thunder but, I have to pay you back.... She arched her back. Uh... oh... too fast... Ire was running so fast he slammed into her, both began tumbling into the surf...

"What? I'm supposed to be scared?" He wasn't. The crazed dog's anger would never scare him away. At the very least Ghest could not leave until the girl was safe. Even if he barely knew her, his morals wouldn't allow him to just ditch her.
The old dog braced himself, paws sinking into the sands as he prepared to meet the bloodthirsty dog's assault. What a surprise it was when the girl finally took off, commanding the dog's attention. As the girl and the mad dog sprinted away, Barghest could only follow after as quickly as possible. "Damn it girl!"
As they two collided, Barghest had no other option but to leap onto the back of the crazy dog, fangs seeking purchase wherever he could, the back of its neck, the throat, whatever as long as he avoided the girl.
Talk about a real dog pile.

Ire felt the older dog's fangs sink into the meat of his flesh. An aggravated scream sounded, it was gurgled and guttural. Goldie gasped at how cold the surf was. Thankfully, the dogs were not too deep in the water. Ire thrashed and struggled with the weight of the other dog on top of his as well as trying to keep his head above the water.
"Help! OH GOD!! Somebody please help me!!...." Muddy's paws sunk into the wet sand. The poor dog was utterly confused. One moment he was sleeping the next he was drowning in the waters of the large wide ocean. A large wave crashed over them all. Goldie turned her back to the oncoming water and used its push to try and help her friends. Goldie nudged the larger brown hound toward the shore just as another wave slammed against them all...

Ghest was not into killing, but if it meant saving the life of himself and that female then he'd do what was necessary. He didn't quite understand what had caused the brown dog to snap, but even if it wasn't his fault, Barghest was not about to let himself be killed over it. It was more of a relief then, when the dog's persona suddenly changed from that of a bloodthirsty monster, to one of a frighted pup. Amidst all the thrashing and carrying on, Ghest would loosen his grip on the dog's flesh and instead transfer that energy to dragging the dog back onto the sand.

It was frightening how much of Mud's life was filled with utterly blank spots. Chunks of his life lost in oblivion and darkness. The brown hound almost wished he could remember some of those times. Then again, knowing Ire and the chaos that always ensues after his release seems to be better left forgotten. After all, Mud would often times think to sooth his aching soul, Sometimes the past is much better left forgotten.
Ire was silent. The mutt mix's orange and blue eyes seemed to glaze over as he found his body going limp in someone's jaws. And then there was a wall of sand. His face on the sand shore, Mud found himself looking up into the eyes of Ghest, the old dog that had saved him...
Goldie almost couldn't believe her own yellow eyes. The old guys was actually doing it... He was carrying Muddy... her legs threatened to give out. She wobbly made it to shore and plopped herself into the soft sand next to her long time friend. "Glad to have you back, pal..." She said breathlessly.
The hybrid looked to the older green hound with a pleasant face and said, "Thank you so much, Ghest. You saved my friend... How could I ever repay such a noble act?" She lowered her head to show her humbleness.
Muddy saw this and struggled to stand and mimicked Goldie's bowed stance....

The old ridgeback merely snorted, expelling sand and sea water from his nose. Ghest simply shook his head. "I'm not so old that I've lost heart yet." He was not accustomed to being thanked. Well he usually kept to himself, solitary in his old age. But he was not the kind to just abandon someone in need. If they couldn't help themselves water dog instinct brought him round to helping them. "Don't worry about it. Just ... don't do it again." Barghest stretched before yawning briefly. "I'm not a pup anymore. You kids tire me out."

Goldie grinned. "Ok, you got it, Grandpa." She wanted to liven up the mood. Things had become far too awkward and stiff lately. Were dogs afterall, can't we relax and enjoy life. She didn't want to seem rude to the older gentleman, she just wanted everyone to get along now that the storm had passed.
Muddy looked at Goldie with a shocked expression. But hearing her laugh again, well it was such a relief to him that he found himself laughing as well.
Once silence took hold again, the two decided it was best to keep this great old dog some company, at least for a little while longer. Goldie sat next to Ghest for ambiant warmth in the chilll before the dawn. Muddy stood like an out of place mailbox. His multi colored eyes gazed off in the distance "Hey..." She called. Mud stared back at her, the hybrid motioned for him to be situated next to her. He smiled, it happened very rarely, like finding a perfect shell on the beach. But when he did smile, it was always genuine...
