"What? Where?" The small white dog ran around the camp in a panic. Where were his people, his master? where had they gone? One minute he was walking with the lady in the woods, and she'd tied him to a tree. He waited a long time, but she never came back. Worried that something had happened to her, he'd chewed off the leash and followed her scent. Returning to camp. No one was there! ”I don't understand this at all ...” The pet whined, before laying down next to a long since cold fire pit.
”Pack, here we will take a break. Pompeii, Vesuvius, you two come with me. And you too Cusp, since you want to prove yourself so badly. Now we hunt.” They hunters stalked through the forest, hot on the trail of a deer. It was a young buck but it would leave the traveling soldiers with more than enough food. The small Italian Greyhound weaved in and out of the deer's legs, aiming to trip it up. While it was distracted, the Beauceron leapt. Sending the buck tumbling to the ground, he grabbed it by the neck and finished it off. ”Good enough Cusp. But you're not ready for a platoon yet.” ”Boss!” ”Sir!” The siblings returned, each with the prey they'd found. Pompeii had a big tom turkey, while Vesuvius had only caught a hare. The sister seemed to mock her brother as she held her larger prey up high. ”Good. This is plenty. Back to the others.” Leaning forward to drag the deer away, Stark paused as his ear twitched. A whine echoed out of a nearby clearing. ”Cusp, come with me. You two, guard dinner.” ”Alright!”
The Eskimo dog fell into a fitful sleep, unable to get used to the sounds of the forest. He was used to an apartment, not the woods! The breaking of a stick in the woods made him leap to his feet. Alabaster turned quickly, pausing face to chest with a large, slate colored dog. ”Ah!” He jumped back. ”What .. .what do you want?” The Beauceron studied the smaller dog for a moment. A house pet, lost in these woods? ”You lost? Where are your owners?”
Lowering his head, the Eskimo dog shook it. ”I … don't know I think … I'm lost.” How many days had he been here waiting? Enough to know that his people were not coming back. But he was scared to admit that he was alone. Embarrassingly, his stomach growled. It even elicited a smirk from the big dog! The Beauceron turned away, muttering something to a smaller dog behind him. Alabaster watched it leave, but it returned just as quickly with a rabbit in its jaws. The Beauceron took it from him, before dropping it at Alabaster's feet. ”Eat it.” ”Huh?” That was food? But it didn't even come from a can? How did this work? Was this what wild dogs ate?
Tentatively, he leaned forward, tearing fur from the rabbit an taking a bit of its still warm flesh. Blood stained his white fur, an at first he wasn't certain he could eat this … this thing! But suddenly it tasted []really[/i] good. Wild dogs had good food! Why had he never tied this before? Digging out all the warm wet stuff hidden beneath the fur he ate his fill before sitting back and licking his jaws clean. ”Thanks! That was … that was really good! Why didn't my people ever feed me this?” He did not notice how the Beauceron rolled his eyes. ”Go down that path there, it leads to people. They'll take you back to the city where you can find your owner.”
Wit that the Beauceron turned away, the small greyhound following him. ”What? Wait!” Alabaster chased after the two, skidding to a stop when the big guy turned to look at him. ”Let me go with you! My owners left me so I don't need to go to the city.” The alpha thought this over for a moment. ”I am Stark. Alpha of the Ohu pack. Welcome to the ranks.” And with that they returned to the rest of the pack, Stark picking up the deer and dragging it back with him.
