“The air is much less stuffy here...” Kanou muttered as the pair padded along through the snow. What had been only a couple hours, felt like days. How much longer would they have to search for something suitable for a meal? Not only was he hungry, but he could sense Ayase's strength dwindling as well. He first felt his hunger a few hours ago after having his last meal about two days ago, seeing as Kanou had made sure that any ounce of food they found in the city, Ayase had eaten. A day, it wasnt too shabby for him, considering his size, it might even be a record! No more record breaking, his hunger really had brought his mood down, and he really didn't feel like being pissy right now.
Ayase looked up at his companion with a soft smile as they came to a halt just around the corner of a human residence, nudging Kanou gently, "We'll find something!" He assured, happily dashing ahead of his companion, "I'll find something for you!"
Kanou smiled and sat down, looking down at his forepaws as he flexed them. The boy was always so eager to do things, especially when it came to helping him out. With a small huff, Kanou lifted his nose to the sky and sniffed the air, "Damn, still no good." Not that he really expected anything larger than a rabbit to be around these parts of the outer rim of the city, but it seems as if nothing was stirring today. The freshly fallen snow all around them was unmarred by any paws except for their own.
Ayase made a sudden noise from the bushes and Kanou leaped to his feet, making it to the bushes in a couple small strides. "Ayase?" He questioned, worried that the other may have found trouble.
Moments later, the young Shepherd padded from the bushes, a rabbit laying limp in his maw. Tail wagging happily, he set the small kill before Kanou and looked up at him, "See! I told you I would!" He sat down and nudged the rabbit closer to Kanou, "Eat!"
With a soft laugh and smile to Ayase, Kanou laid down and took the kill into his maw, crunching the bones before laying it between his forepaws. Ayase watched with delight as he ate, carefully avoiding the bones.

Gurgle.
"Damn it....shut up stomach..."
Guuurgle.
"I'm telling you to shut up already..."
GUUURGLE.
"SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY YOU MORONIC PIECE OF CRAP."
Ras snarled in rage as the organ continued to whine pathetically. Going three days without food had not served its best interests apparently; it'd been driving him mad ever since he left the last territory, but it'd reached its height in painful annoyance as soon as he'd entered the outskirts of the human city. 'Hell..it's like it can tell there's food nearby, the small dog thought grumpily as he padded (or rather, jumped from spots) through the thick snow. It was almost like swimming at points with all the blasted white stuff. Except he was A), on land, B), not underwater, and C), didn't feel like he'd drown from the weight of sodden fur.
"Oh yeah, this is exactly like swimming," Ras snorted as he once again dragged himself to higher ground. Shaking the flakes from his red and white coat, he stretched his hind legs by clawing at the blasted collar around his neck...again. Maybe it was the 324th time he’d gone out of his way to cause harm to it this month, though he’d lost count. 324 times seemed like a good enough number anyways. The collar had grown more worn than ever over the past few weeks due to Ras’s growing fury with the season. Winter, specifically. The months of freezing cold EVERYWHERE with no hope of escape and, not to mention, very little of the very important thing called food. The dog’s stomach howled again as his thoughts wandered to a particularly juicy looking steak….with lots of human spices decorating it….and tons and tons of chicken and pork surrounding it in a beautiful masterpiece of artwork only a true canine could appreciate…
“GAH.” Ras shook his head quickly in attempts of clearing the mouthwatering fantasy. “Gotta keep moving, gotta keep moving.” Flicking his tail to rest on his back, Ras jumped from his place and hurried forward. He hoped to reach the outer limits of the city (which apparently was called ‘Tokyo’ from the information he’d gathered) by sun high at the very latest. From what he could see through the tree branches, it wouldn’t be long until then too. ‘Good good’, Ras thought as he avoided a fairly sharp rock. ‘When I get to that damned city already, I’m knocking over the nearest trash can and gorging myself senseless. Maybe THEN my old pal ‘bottomless pit formerly known as gut’ will cut the crap and finally give me some peace. If the higher up bigwigs don’t like it, they can kiss my furry ass.’ Drool dribbled down his mouth as he imagined the few day stale feast that awaited him. Normally the pooch would avoid humans at any cost, but when it came to the point of near starvation (plus his unfortunate lack of ability to hunt any sort of animal in snow), Ras gladly welcomed any food he could find. “Almost there,” he said quietly. “Almost there…”
Eventually the trees and snow evened out and he found himself near the first signs of human civilization. Ras gave the air a small sniff, and immediately his eyes grew to the size of dinner plates. That smell…that wonderful, absolutely beautiful smell….
“Fresh rabbit!” Saliva gushed inside his mouth as his nose took in the scent delightedly. Ras put a paw forward as if he were about to run head first and grab the meal, but logic took hold of him before his stomach could. If there was a freshly killed rabbit nearby, obviously there had to be the predator that made the kill. With the blood stinking up the air, Ras couldn’t tell what sort of animal it was; it could be suicidal for all he knew to run over there.
‘Better keep low and see what I can find out.’ The dog lowered himself into a crouch and crawled until the tip of his muzzle could reach the back of the bushes. He gave the air a sniff again; from what he could tell, there were two other animals with the rabbit. Ras still couldn’t tell what species they belonged to yet though. ‘C’mon..what kind of animals are the—GYAH’
Just as he’d poked his nose further into the bush, the snow he’d been standing on gave way. Ras tumbled headfirst through the bushes and fell flat on his face. Grimacing in pain from the several scratches he’d earned across his cheeks, he looked up….to find himself face to face with possibly the hugest dog he’d ever laid eyes on.
“Oh hell..!” Ras turned his head sharply to see a German Shepherd sitting not too far off from the giant beast.
Crap!

Ayase sat in silence, happily wagging his tail as he watched Kanou finish up his meal. The older dog was always taking care of him - making him eat first, protecting him, not to mention being the only family he had - it made Ayase feel good when he could do something like this for Kanou, even though it seemed small. The larger dog took his time, carefully cleaning the kill of all that he could, knowing that it would make Ayase happy.
Finished, Kanou ran his large tongue over the fur on his muzzle several times, attempting to clean it of the leftover blood. Grumbling, he dipped his nose down into the snow and rubbed it around, hoping that it would finish the job for him. Lifting his nose from the cold crystals, he shook his head to rid himself of the excess, Ayase giggling at him. Looking at the other, Kanou felt confused, What on earth was he laughing at? "Ya missed some." Ayase stood up and took the couple steps forward that was needed to stand before Kanou. For once, Ayase found himself looking down as his larger companion, and it made him grin wider, causing slight irritation in Kanou.
But it didn't last long.
"What did I miss?" It was so strange, looking up at Ayase. Part of him was so desperately biting back the laughter, the other part of him felt overjoyed for once. It was such a strange feeling, one he had rarely felt before, one that only Ayase could bring out in him - and he kinda liked it.
And when Ayase's small tongue slipped out from his maw and across the bridge of his nose, wiping away a small patch of snow, Kanou couldn't bite his laughter back any longer. The shepherd felt so much pride and happiness at this seemingly small feat of making Kanou laugh, that he thought his chest might burst. But unknown to him, the feat to make Kanou laugh, was larger than he thought. "Thank you, Ayase."
The shepherd tilted his head, looking directly into the eyes of Kanou, "Thank me? For what?"
Smiling, Kanou opened his maw to reply and closed it rather suddenly with a growl as the bushes began to rustle. His eyes darted to the bushes as Ayase's ears laid back, falling down to a cautious stance, belly touching the snow as he two looked at the bushes. Kanou sat up, his ears twitching as he listened to the different sounds coming from the bushes. Tilting his head, Kanou swallowed deeply, one corner of his lips raising slightly in confusion. He wasn't sure if he should be alert for a threat, or move out of the way before he became a landing pad.
It seemed like his question was answered as moments later, a rather small dog tumbled out from the bushes grasp and rolled right in between Ayase and himself. Ayase backed up suddenly, landing on his haunches, leaning back away from the stranger. Part of hims was scared, part of him was curious. He had never seen a dog so small, let alone one that looked like this. He tilted his head, blue eyes studying the dog as he looked from Kanou to him. Is.... Is he scared? Ayase wondered, his ears raising up slowly as he continued to look at him.
Kanou snorted, quite frankly, he was expecting something... well... bigger. Especially with all the commotion he had heard. "Well, it doesn't seem like you're much of a threat." He smiled and lowered his head next to the smaller dogs, "Lemme guess, the smell of this-" he pawed at the rabbit carcass that he had just previously devoured and the rather bloody snow that encircled it, "drew you here. Am I correct?"

Two big dogs...one REALLY big dog....and himself. As much as he would loathe his entire being if he ever admitted it, Ras felt very very…small right then.
And now he was in the middle of two very big beasts. How the HELL did he always put himself in these sort of situations?! Did he have some sort of trouble magnet lodged deep in his brain, always pinpointing him to the nearest catastrophe it could find? Or was he just too goddamned thick as he made his way out into the world, self consciously not caring about whether he had a hide to sleep on the next morning? Either way, Ras was in a shit load of trouble and he damn well knew it. It wouldn’t be long before the other dogs noticed his fear as well by the way his ears kept twitching like mad. His left ear with the tear in it was particularly flicking a lot; it kept slapping the base of his head with increasing tempo.
Ras blinked both eyes rapidly as he quickly took in his surroundings. The big dog, possibly even bigger than 35’ inches, stood closest to him with a look as if he’d expected something, well, not him. Muscular looking as well, an odd marking decorated both sides of his face. Had Ras not been so eager to escape, he would’ve asked (or rather, rudely demanded to know) how the canine had acquired it. He’d seen markings like that on humans, but never on animals. The dog (or Gigantor as Ras dubbed him, for just saying big dog all the time got old fast) looked roughly around the age of four; so big and experienced. ‘Well that just brightens up my day,’ Ras thought angrily. The other dog (a German Shepherd by the looks of him) seemed much younger though; possibly only a few months older than himself. However, he was also much taller than Ras could ever hope to be. ‘Almost a foot taller yet he’s only a little older than me? How the hell is THAT fair?! It’s like I landed in the freaking clearing of the giant mutts!’
It took him a few moments to finally realize that Gigantor had started talking to him…and had also moved his face very close to Ras’s. With a jolt of alarm, the small dog scrambled to his feet and backed up several paces, only to fall back down again on his rump. “The he—hell was that for?!” Ras stammered, and instinctively began to claw at the green collar again. The small yellow identification tag jingled pitifully as he did so; hot embarrassment shot through his body immediately. He was unused to having company to make fun of him for his little ‘bad habit’, and probably anyone would laugh at a dog going into frenzy over a stupid collar. Ras brought his hind leg down sheepishly and instead of staring at the others, stared at his own white paws atop the snow. It crunched underneath them; he supposed that other than Gigantor and his lackey Shepherd, and of course now he himself, no one else had yet stepped upon the freshly fallen snow.
“ Well, it doesn't seem like you're much of a threat.” Ras’s ears twitched as he regained focus on the big dog again. ‘Is…that a challenge? Is he calling me…’ Lip curling upward at the very idea, Ras quickly bit his tongue so he wouldn’t further his troubles. “ Lemme guess, the smell of this drew you here. Am I correct?” The husky picked his head up again and, much to his dismay, the blasted rabbit that had caused all of this mess lay totally devoured. All that was left was its bones and blood, none of which would satisfy Ras’s grumbling stomach.
“…That’s just brilliant. The stupid rabbit’s already gone and eaten, not even a morsel left,” Ras groaned.

Watching the small dog with slight amusement, Kanou couldn’t help but to smile. He seemed to be afraid, and Kanou couldn’t blame him, I mean, the dog fell right in between two dogs who were considerably larger than he was. It couldn’t be helped, fear was a natural feeling for situations like this, but there was also another air do the dog, more of a cocky one. Following his trained instinct, Kanou studied the small dog. Beyond being small, he donned a green colored collar – though quite different from his own, and a pelt similar to his own, only in marking though. Kanou wondered offhandedly what breed this stranger was, as he seemed not to be purebred.
Ayase, on the other hand, seemed to be much more curious of the dog. He dipped his head and inched it closer to him, sniffing gently. He was older, yet so much smaller, it was such a wonder to him! This was his first encounter with a dog who was drastically smaller than himself, as most of the street dogs averaged his size or larger. With ears raised, his head shot up as the stranger quickly backed away from Kanou, landing on his bum merely inches from his own paws.
“The he—hell was that for?!”
Kanou smirked, biting back a laugh, man was this dog twitchy. What on earth was his problem? “What ever could you mean? I didn’t do a thing.”
Why is he so jumpy? He wondered as he looked up at Kanou to find the bigger dog amused at this behavior. Is he afraid? It would make sense to him, he figured, since they were both bigger than he was, but at the same time, it didn’t make much sense to Ayase – as Kanou had taught him not to be afraid of size, nor breed. Looking from Kanou’s collar, down to the green one the stranger wore, Ayase became increasingly curious. Why is he wearing metal tags on his? He saw the similarities between the two, but more differences – including material. Is he one of these infamous ‘pets’ I’ve heard about? His ears pricked up as he heard the smaller dogs stomach growl, hadn’t he eaten either? Standing up, he quickly bounded off into the bushes once again without warning.
Watching Ayase disappear into the snow covered bushes, Kanou huffed. What the hell was that boy up to now? Rarely did he just run off like that, especially with strangers about. Thinning his mouth, he looked back down to the other, many questions filling his mind. But his mind also told him not to ask any, as he rarely ever did without strict formality. Part of him figured that his normal strict behavior would drive this dog away, and he wasn’t quite ready for that. Biting back his pride, he sighed softly – Ayase was always better at this, and the dog had left him alone, didn’t he realize how uncomfortable he was with company? I mean, he knew his companion knew his quirks… but did he realize that they never left him?
“…That’s just brilliant. The stupid rabbit’s already gone and eaten, not even a morsel left,”
So it was the scent of the kill that brought him here… Kanou wasn’t surprised, its not like he couldn’t expect the scent of fresh blood filling the air to catch a nose or two, it was near impossible, especially in these regions where the wild dogs ran free and abundant. Absentmindedly, his tongue ran over his maw once again at the thought, picking up small traces of leftover blood. His ear twitched as the scent of a new kill reached his nose and Ayase padded out from the bushes, another rabbit in his maw, though a bit smaller than the last. Damn, the kid’s good at catching those… he thought with a smile.
It was true, Ayase was fast and agile, and it definitely aided in catching the quick beasts. Padding over to the smaller dog, Ayase dropped the kill at his feet, sitting down and licking his own maw. “Eat.” His words coming out as a mixture of a command and an offer, Ayase’s blue eyes once again focused on the smaller dog before he lowered his head and nudged it closer to him.
Sometimes, Ayase was too kind for his own good, but sometimes, kindness was the way things had to be dealt with. Looking from Ayase to the smaller dog once again, Kanou quietly cleared his throat, “You got a name, stranger?”

Chopper sighed, padding along the outskirts and into the forest. Sometimes things were such a bother in the city, and it annoyed him; the lights, the noise, the suffocating mixture of bad and good energies. All to be taken in paw at muzzle value he supposed. Really though, does the city ever snooze? Maybe they have too much fun stuff to do? the young Pit pup giggled as he continued along his way.
It wasn't too long before a light, coppery taste in the air landed on his tongue with the grace of a heavy car. He was used to eating food found in the many recepticles scattered around the city, but this smell was so... exotic. He knew exactly what it was. "Mmm... blood from a kill. It smells sweet, though. I wonder what it could be?" Entranced by the coppery tang filling his senses Chopper set a carefree pace in the direction he was pulled.
It took a little while, a few small cuts, and an aggrevated stomach later to catch up to the smell. The young Pitbull almost walked into the clearing where he smelled the blood at, but then voices and other smells caught his attention, and he froze. His eyes flew open as he took a peek through the bushes he stopped behind. Three HUGE dogs... one smaller than the other two, but the fct still remained. I... think I stumbled onto something I shouldn't have... I don't even know their intentions. What would they DO to someone as small and young as me?
Chopper mind raced with thoughts of all the things they could do to him, and might do to him if they recognized him. It wasn't exactly unknown that he killed his own parents/ But... it wasn't me!! I know no one would ever believe me, but I... I didn't...! His small frame shook with fright as a silky voice slipped through his mind like a velvety fog. Hehehe... now don't be modest, you dumbass. YOU DID. You did because you let me in, you embraced me... and you LOVED it. Tears started sliding down his face like watery streaks coming off a snowman in the onset of Spring. Chopper felt so cold, defenseless... he lost track of everything around him except for that icy voice, and whimpered almost silently.

Ras glared at Gigantor warily. The dog didn't seem like he was going to eat him; rather, he seemed amused. He didn't dare linger on the thought that Gigantor was laughing at him though. If he had, he'd throw a fit. Throwing a fit in front of something that looked like it could break his spine in one snap would not help his situation. Still, he forced himself to sit on his haunches and stare at his paws. Ras refused to look at anything except his white little paws resting on the crunchy snow. He didn't even look up when the Shepherd lackey rushed past him into the bushes. The sudden movement had made him jump slightly though, and the fur on his neck stood on end with annoyance at his own fear.
'Why am I being such a coward? It's not like they're gonna hurt me. At least..that's what they say. Can't ever be too sure. Still..I--"
Sniff sniff.
Immediately all his senses were hardwired to a certain fluffy rabbit. A certain fluffy rabbit hanging limp from the jaws of the German Shepherd. Ras couldn't help himself; drool over flooded his mouth and he had to run his tongue over it to brush it away. The small dog padded over to him and dropped the plump thing at his paws. He told him in a soft voice "Eat." As if that were necessary. Barely seconds had passed after the rabbit had hit the snow that Ras was gorging himself, tearing it piece from piece to satisfy the needs of his wailing stomach. He didn't even bother to say thank you. Well, he wouldn't have said it anyways if he didn't feel on the verge of starvation. Ras might've considered it though. Maybe.
Either way, the rabbit was delicious. Nice and tender. Though, really anything would have suited his taste buds at that moment. Even a stingy old crow. Ras barely heard Gigantor grumbled about if he had a name too through his noisy meal.
Licking the blood off from his maw, Sassafras looked at the huge dog again. Mouth bulging with pieces of rabbit, he managed to squeeze out ' 'fit'zz Razz. Fot's yuurs, Gifaaantur? (It's Rass. What's yours, Gigantor?)" He had no idea if the dog would understand him, but he really didn't care. All that held meaning was finishing off the blasted rabbit.
Through the blood, Rass's sensitive nose didn't detect the nearby dog's scent. Had he known, he might have made himself look more..presentable to the situation. Still, as he couldn't tell the rabbit's scent from his own anymore, he failed to notice that anyone else was nearby watching.
